Mystery Date

A few months back we added a line item to our budget called “Date Night.” We decided we needed more dedicated time as a couple and decided it would be nice to do a date night once a month. Sound simple enough right? Just once a month, we would take the time to go on a date– it didn’t have to be anything too extravagant but it couldn’t be Chipotle (let’s just say the stakes were not high).

We had the very best intentions for this new plan, but I kid you not month after month went by without a single date planned. At this point the line item in our budget began piling up and we almost just threw the idea out all together, but then we heard of a friend of a friend who had tried a new thing in Seattle called Mystery. It was a service that would plan a date for you from activities to food to transportation, they took care of all of it. The thing was, they don’t tell you what you’ll be doing until your Lyft takes you there– the whole thing is a surprise. This sounded pretty intriguing and we decided to give it a try.

You start by taking a quiz. It asks you general questions to get to know you like “Do you like to try new things?”, “Do you drink alcohol?”, “Do you like loud environments?”… Then you pick a price point you’d like to stay within and pick a day. Easy as that. No looking up a bunch of different restaurants, going back and forth about what you want to do, all planned with the click of a button. Already off to a good start seeing that our date was actually planned.

A day or so before our date we get a text from our date planner telling us that we should have a snack before our date as dinner will be later and that we should wear layers in case we get warm. No surprises spilled but we were definitely getting excited.

The day of our date came and we get a text saying our ride is on its way! The app is pretty amazing because it’s integrated with Lyft so everything is all in one place. Once the Lyft arrives we head for our first stop. The app tells us that it’s in the general location of SoDo but doesn’t tell us exactly where we are headed. In fact we go right to an area we are pretty familiar with and as soon as we arrive we get another message telling us we are going to a place called Lawless Forge, and that we’ll be doing a forging class. Wow, how unique! It’s definitely not something we would have thought to do, and didn’t even know that the place existed even though we are always in that area. We ended up making knives from a half of a horseshoe, and it was so fun!

After we finished the class, which took around 3 hours, we were sent off in another Lyft towards Beacon Hill. When we arrived, we received another message telling us we were going to a restaurant called Homer. We’d never heard of it but told them we had a reservation. We were seated and immediately greeted with a glass of champagne. The restaurant served Mediterranean and Middle Eastern inspired cuisine, which was so delicious. Again, it was a place we probably never would have tried.

Overall, we had such a fun night. For me, the best part is not having any of the stress of planning it or worrying about what to do. We also rarely try new things, but like to, so having something force us to do it was certainly a treat. I’d highly recommend a Mystery date to anyone looking to switch it up, or it you’re like us, actually go on a date for once. Check them out and get ready for a fun night of surprises!
